Alexander West

Alexander West, 86, of Catawba, SC passed away Friday, September 10, 2010. He was preceded in death by his wife, Atha Lee West of 62 years of marriage. He is survived by his son, Gary Alexander West; daughter, Gail Gardener; grandchildren, David Alexander West, Angela Marie West and Grant Gardener; great-grand-daughter, Alexis Marie West; and sister, Katie Howell. Funeral services will be held at Catawba Baptist Church at 3 p.m. Sunday, September 12 with burial immediately following. Visitation and viewing for friends and family will be hosted by Gail Gardener from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, September 11 at Bass-Cauthen Funeral Home. Mr. West was a retired home building contractor. He was also a union activist against the textile industry during the 1940's and 50's. He was a devout Christian and a member of Catawba Baptist. He previously served as a Sunday school teacher and Deacon at Park Baptist Church and Northside Baptist Church. He was a self taught biblical scholar with a home library of over 100 books from prominent religious scholars. Mr. West was an avid sportsman. He loved fishing, hunting, baseball, football and his beloved Braves and Gamecocks. He was also a unique artist and craftsman with wood. His handmade furniture was adored by all and a legacy left behind of his outstanding talents. The family requests that any donations be made to the Patrick Hospice House in lieu of flowers.
