Andrew Scott Ray

Indian Land, SC Andrew Scott Ray, age 80 saw the sunrise from Heaven on September 1st 2013. Born April 17th 1933 in Charlotte, NC he was preceded in death by his mother Margaret Barkley Ray and his step-father, Odell Griffin, and his grandparents Tyre and Mamie Barkley. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Matilda Dunlap Ray and his daughters Debbie Ray Whitsett and husband Paul and Marcie Ray all of Fort Mill and his son, Scott Ray and wife, Michelle of Davidson, NC. While he loved his entire family, the greatest loves of his life were his grandchildren, Rachael Zindars of Wilmington, NC; Paul Whitsett of Eugene, OR; Victoria Whitsett of Charlotte, NC; Tyler and Andrew Ray of Davidson, NC; Wesley McCracken of Fort Mill; Lauren and Christopher Gay of Davidson, NC. Scott graduated from Charlotte Technical High School in 1952 and joined the navy, serving during the Korean War. He was discharged in 1955 and employed by Charlotte Police Department, and the Sheriff's Department for about 12 years. He was later a District Manager at the Charlotte Observer and retired in 1998 from the security position with the City of Charlotte. Scott was always a fun loving person, he never missed a chance to tell a joke, smile or tell someone he loved them. Scott loved working with young people and coached Pop Warner football in Charlotte for a number of years, and later in Indian Land, he was also a Mason in the Indian Land Lodge#414 In retirement, he loved working with his hands and made numerous pieces of furniture for his grandchildren. The other great joy of his life was watching the hawks, deer, humming birds and other wild animals that came in his yard. Funeral Service will be held 2 PM Thursday, September 5th 2013 at Palmetto Funeral Home Chapel 2049 Carolina Place Drive, Fort Mill, with Rev. Barry Yates officiating, the family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Burial will be private at Elmwood Cemetery in Charlotte, NC. In Lieu of Flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Charlotte, 2700 Toomey Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28203.
