Barbara (Boyd) Evans, 72, of Indian Land, SC, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at Atrium Health Pineville. Born May 16, 1950, in Buchanan County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Milton and Annie Boyd. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Peggy Tiller. Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Rev. George Evans, her children Aaron Evans and Kristen Childers, son-in-law Brett Childers, grandsons Brady Childers (10), Boyd Childers (7), and Bennett Childers (2), siblings Viola Coleman, Betty Perkins, Joan Boyd, and Lester Boyd, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Barbara attended Pikeville College where she met and married her husband, George. They lived in Louisville, KY while George attended seminary and she worked for a physician’s office. They later moved to Bloomingdale, OH where they had their son and resided for six years. From Ohio, they moved to Hagerstown, MD where they had their daughter and lived for 20 years. While in Hagerstown, Barbara was active with Washington County Schools as a volunteer, Odyssey of the Mind coach, substitute teacher, and served on numerous committees. She moved to Harrisonburg, VA and lived there for 17 years where she was an avid James Madison University football and basketball fan. She made best friends who were like family she kept up with from Ohio, Maryland, and Virginia.
She moved almost three years ago to Indian Land, SC to be closer to her daughter and grandsons. She enjoyed attending their sporting and school events and being the best grandmommy to them, giving them all her attention and energy. She kept her youngest grandson on weekdays and was like a second mother to him.
Everyone who met Barbara knew she was full of love and life. She gave the best hugs, was full of positivity, and will be missed by so many she touched during her time here.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 18th, at 4:00pm at Cooks Creek Presbyterian Church, 4222 Mt. Clinton Pike, Harrisonburg, VA 22802.
