Bonnie Brown Alexander

March 14, 1953 — February 21, 2015

Bonnie Brown Alexander March 14, 1953 - February 21, 2015 ROCK HILL, SC :::::::: Bonnie Alexander, 61, a long-time resident of Rock Hill, South Carolina, died peacefully on February 21, 2015, after a courageous battle with cancer. Bonnie was born March 14, 1953, in Atlanta, Georgia, to Frances Hughes Brown and Benjamin Alexander Brown, Jr. Bonnie graduated from Winthrop University with a BS in Education, and she completed her Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education. She married Sam Alexander in 1973 and taught second grade at Indian Land Elementary School before having children. She also taught preschool at Westminster Christian School and then at Episcopal Day School for 10 years. She also owned and operated School Days, a full day preschool, with her sister, Deborah, for 16 years. She believed not only in the potential of children, but in their many creative and intelligent capabilities in the present. She listened to children and really knew every child she ever taught. She knew what they loved, what they excelled in, and who they could become. She never talked down to children, but treated them as creative and intelligent people. She also believed in enjoying the messiness of childhood - jumping in rain puddles, letting sticky popsicles drip off an arm on a summer day, and playing with homemade playdough on the kitchen table. She loved good children's books and introducing children to a world of reading and learning. She also loved her annual graduation program at School Days, where the children sang songs. She was always so proud of the children. Bonnie was also a devoted wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. She also loved her church family at First Presbyterian Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher and committee member. She was very kind, compassionate, patient, and a conscientious listener. She believed in the art of creating a home - a place where one felt at once comforted, loved, and constantly reminded of the values that made life worth living. She battled cancer at three different times in her life, but she never let cancer define her life or get her down. She loved life and remained happy, positive, and hopeful always. She loved doting on her grandchildren, walks along Holden Beach, rocking on the front porch of the South Carolina Home at Montreat, Christmas, celebrating birthdays, and a good movie. Bonnie was preceded in death by her mother. She is survived by her husband, Sam Alexander, of Rock Hill, SC; her children, Susan Roberson, and husband, Keith, Patrick Alexander, and Jordan Alexander. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Kate, Anna, and Elizabeth Roberson. She is also survived by her father and sister, Deborah Nipe, of Lancaster, SC. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Betsy Alexander, of Asheville, NC, brother-in-law Charles Alexander and wife Salli, of Greenville, SC, and brother-in-law, Stephen Alexander of Beaumont, TX, and many adored nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 pm Tuesday, February 24 at First Presbyterian Church, 234 E. Main Street Rock Hill, SC 29730, with Rev. Dr. Larry Duncan and Rev. Dr. Mark Verdery officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service and suggest memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church, PO Box 1011 Rock Hill, SC 29731.
