Bruce S. Treadaway, Sr., 91, of Fort Mill, SC, died on Tuesday, August 1, 2023. Son of the late Edward Walter Treadaway and Fannie Head Treadaway, he was born June 15, 1932 in Wadesboro, NC. After attending public schools in Wadesboro, NC, he attended Wingate and Central Piedmont Community colleges and received an Associate of Arts degree in police science criminology from CPCC. He was a graduate of the FBI National Academy and also attended the Southern Police Institute of the University of Louisville in Kentucky.
He married Vada Myers in 1948 and they made their home in Charlotte and Mint Hill for nearly 45 years. They had one son, Bruce S. Treadaway, Jr. and two grandchildren.
Passionate about the law enforcement profession, he was the longest serving law enforcement officer in North Carolina, retiring in 1992 with 46 and a half years serving Mecklenburg County. He started his career with the Charlotte Police Department in 1957 as a recruit patrolling uptown Charlotte on foot. He moved to vice in the 1960s and ran internal affairs from 1979 until 1986. He was promoted to Commander in 1987 and finished his career with the city police department supervising the Investigative Division, which included Felony Investigation, Youth Bureau, Vice and Narcotics Bureau, Polygraph Section, Crime Analytics, Police Athletic League and School Resource Officers. After taking a year off to care for his beloved wife, Vada, he joined the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Department where he served until December 31, 2003.
He highly valued physical fitness and was an avid runner who went on to compete in various races winning numerous awards.
Surviving are his son, Bruce S. Treadaway, Jr. (Sam) and daughter-in-law, Rebecca Treadaway of Rock Hill; grandson Wes Treadaway (Kristen) of Lewisville, NC; granddaughter Jenny Cartee (Heath) of Pisgah Forest, NC; six great-grandchildren; sister Myra McRae of Rockingham, NC; fiancée Rosalie Steinitz of Fort Mill; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vada Myers Treadaway, his brother Don Treadaway, and his sister Lois Thomas.
A service to honor Bruce’s life will be held at Fort Mill First Baptist Church in the chapel on August 10, 2023 at 2pm. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1-2pm. Anyone needing to avoid the stairs should utilize the portico around the back of the church.
Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
