Calvin Jerry Harris

FORT MILL, SC CALVIN JERRY HARRIS, age 84, of Fort Mill, South Carolina, formerly of Highlands, North Carolina, passed away Tuesday, September 16, 2014, at the Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Charlotte, NC., following a brief illness. Jerry was the son of the late John Calvin Harris and Virginia Russell Harris of Charlotte, North Carolina. He graduated from Central High School in Charlotte and was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served in the United States Army with the 54th Combat Engineer Battalion from 1951 to 1953 and was a Korean War Veteran. Jerry joined the former Ervin Construction Company in Charlotte in 1960; serving as President from 1965 to 1971 and as CEO from 1971 to 1977. From 1977 to 1981 he served as CEO of Shenandoah Development Company in Newnan, Georgia; from 1981 to his retirement he was President of Harris Development Company, which developed condominium and office projects throughout the greater Atlanta area. Throughout his career he earned seven state and national awards, including Best Apartment Project, East Coast; Best Planned Urban Development, USA; Best Subdivision, USA; and Best Homes for the Money, USA. He was a founder, director, and president of Boys Town of North Carolina. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Thomas Russell Harris. He is survived by eight children, Chip Harris of Fort Mill, SC; Jenny Harris Gore (Carl) of Tega Cay, SC; Michael Harris of Lake Murray, SC; David Harris (Kelley) of Summerfield, NC; Beverly Harris Spisak (Mark) of Tega Cay, SC; Lynn Harris Wheeler (David) of Rio Rancho, NM; Carter Bolt (Jennifer) of Katy, TX; and Whitney Bolt Lewis (Ned) of Charlotte, NC; as well as 13 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The family is being served by Palmetto Funeral Home in Fort Mill, SC. At the request of the deceased services will be private.
