Carl M. Swainey, 90, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2021, at the Atrium Hospital in Pineville, NC.
Born in Hillsborough, NC, Carl is remembered by those who knew him as an outstanding football player for Hillsborough High School, from which he graduated in 1951.
In the 1950's Mr. Swainey chose to serve his country by enlisting in the US Air
Force. Following an Honorable Discharge, he found his calling by providing for the safety of others in the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, from which he retired after many years. Avid golfers, he and his wife played many courses from Pebble Beach in California to the Old Course at St Andrews in Scotland.
Carl was predeceased by his parents Mary and Noah Swainey, and by two sisters Christine Osborne and Peggy Combs. He is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Hilda Scott Swainey of the home; his faithful son Tony and wife Janeece of Clover, SC; his grandson Anthony and wife Nicole of Tega Cay, SC; his granddaughter Kristin and husband Tobias Hampson of Raleigh, NC. Carl is survived by six great grandchildren, the light of his recent years: Hannah, Addie and Trey Swainey; Evie, Josephine and Julia Hampson. He is also survived by a sister Ann Williams of Durham and brother, Walter and wife Jean of Hillsborough.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Research Foundation.
