Caroline Riley Turner of York, SC died on Monday, October 24, 2011 in Rock Hill, SC. She was born on September 1, 1918, in Chester, SC, to the late James Alvin and Joanna Yarborough Riley. She was the widow of John Matthew Turner. She was also preceded in death by two brothers - James Alvin Riley, Jr., and Henry Yarborough Riley, and two sisters - Lillian Harden Riley Mixon and Joanne Riley Sanderson all of Columbia, SC. Caroline is survived by two sons; John David Turner of North Wilkesboro, NC and James Riley Turner of York, SC. Also surviving are her grandchildren; Elizabeth Turner Lynch of Oak Ridge, TN, Matthew Riley Turner of Chester, SC and David Beers Turner of York, SC. Other survivors are great-grandchildren Emily Caroline Parks and Maggie Lynch of Oak Ridge, TN, Nicholas Aaron Turner, Christopher Matthew Turner, Noah Alexander Turner all of Chester, SC, and many other loving family and friends. Caroline graduated from Winthrop College with a Bachelor of Arts degree and the University of South Carolina with a Master of Arts in English degree. She was a teacher and certified counselor for thirty-four years at Irmo High School and York Comprehensive High School. She served on the York Public Library Board and was a member of the original York County Library Board. She was a member of the White Rose Book Club, Yorkville Artist's Guild, Delta Kappa Gama, D.A.R. Caroline was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she served in the choir for over fifty years. A service to celebrate Caroline's life will be held Thursday at 2:00pm at First Presbyterian Church in York with Reverend Tom McPhail and Reverend Ed Jillson officiating. Interment will follow the service at Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until the hour of service in the Ladies Parlor at the church, and at others times at Caroline's home. Memorials in honor of Caroline may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 10 West Liberty Street, York, SC 29745, or to a charity of your choice.
