Charles Frank Grogan

July 30, 1944 — April 28, 2024

Fort Mill, SC

With heavy hearts and loving memories, we announce the passing of Charles Frank Grogan, 79, a resident of Fort Mill, South Carolina. Charles was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 28th, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was comforted in his final moments by the presence of his loved ones in his home.

Charles was born on July 30th, 1944, in Newport, Oregon to Merle and Barbara Grogan. As the youngest of three sons, he shared a close bond with his brothers, Dutch and Dale. A sports enthusiast from an early age, Charles excelled in basketball during his high school years in Newport and later served as a coach for the Catholic Youth Organization. His love for sports also extended to golf, where he was a formidable competitor due to his low handicap average. He was also a great lover of the outdoors and relished the times spent rebuilding Jeeps with his brothers.

In 1963, Charles embarked on a distinguished career as a crane operator with the International Longshoreman and Warehouse Union. His dedication and expertise were well-known, and he held records on the West Coast for the most container moves in a shift. After an admirable 43-year tenure, he retired in 2008, leaving a legacy of hard work and resilience that was an epitome of his generation.

Charles accepted Christ in the early 1980s on a golf course with the Pastor of the church that he and his wife were attending.  Later, in his retirement, he enjoyed a full-time RV life, traveling across the United States with his beloved wife, Vicki, to whom he was married for 42 years. His love for adventure also took him on several Caribbean cruises where he explored different Countries, cultures, and landscapes.

Charles is survived by his devoted wife, Vicki, and his loving children, David Hocott and Brenda Simons. His legacy will continue to live on in his nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and eleven step-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for Charles's life is scheduled for Tuesday, May 7th at 11:00am, at the Bass-Cauthen Funeral Home, located at 700 Heckle Boulevard, Rock Hill, SC 29730. Following this, a brief graveside service will take place at the adjacent Rock Hill Memorial Gardens. For those who wish to express their condolences with flowers, please have them delivered to the Bass-Cauthen Funeral Home.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the dedicated team at Via Health Partners Hospice Care in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Their kindness and compassion made a significant difference during Charles' final days.

Charles was a man of deep wisdom, practical skills, and unwavering dedication to his family. His straightforward yet compassionate nature, his generosity, and his strong work ethic have left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He was a true representation of the Silent Generation - a generation known for its discipline, respect for authority, and traditional family values.

Now, Charles rests in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His memory will forever be etched in our hearts, and his life celebrated for the remarkable man that he was. Rest in peace, Charles Frank Grogan.
