Charles "Charlie" Hughes was born and raised in Duncan, Oklahoma to Maurine and Charles Hughes. After high school, Charlie joined the Army, serving in occupied Japan after the war to rebuild the country. He was honorably discharged in 1949. Charlie moved to Denver in 1955. There, he and his business partner started Transcontinental Oil Company, which experienced much success in its 45 years.
Charlie is survived by his beloved wife Barbara and her daughter, Shannon (Ft. Mill) and Shannon's daughters Cara and Brittany (Ft. Mill); his three children Barbara Lanz-Mateo (Santa Barbara, CA), Patti Goodnight (Ft. Mill), and Charles "Doug" Douglas Hughes (Elgin, SC); grandchildren Megan Lanz (Aurora, CO) and Alyssa Simonsen (Santa Barbara, CA); Christopher Goodnight (Ft. Mill) and Katie Parton (Charleston, SC); and Sophia Hughes (Gibsonton, FL); Charlie had six great-grandchildren as well as step-daughter Bonita Coghill (Henderson, KY), and her two children, Stacy and Timmy. He was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Langenberg of Kansas.
Shannon Martin was a great help with Charlie in the past year. The entire family is grateful for her love and kindness.
Charlie will be laid to rest Thursday, December 17, 2020 at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, SC.
