Charles Otis Patton, Jr. of Rock Hill, SC died Friday, August 15, 2014. A memorial service will be held at 2pm Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church with visitation immediately following. Mr. Patton was born in Rock Hill, S.C. on April 12, 1918. He was the son of the late Charles Otis Patton, Sr. and Lillian Caveny Patton. He was a graduate of Rock Hill High School and Georgia School of Technology where he earned the degree of Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management. Upon graduation from Georgia Tech in 1940, he entered service in the United States Army at Fort Bragg, N.C. in February 1941.There he became a member of the First Field Artillery Observation Battalion, 13th Field Artillery Brigade. He served for four years and seven months being discharged from service at Fort Bragg, N.C. in September 1945. During this period he served in the European Theater of Operations for 43 months in the following areas: England, Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. Upon his return to the States, MR. Patton married Eleanor Breeden of Bennettsville, S.C. on September 20, 1947. He accepted a position as the first Purchasing Agent for the new Delta Finishing Division, J.P. Stevens &Co. at Cheraw, S.C. He and Mrs. Patton made their home in Bennettsville, S.C. He was active in the civic life of the community where, among others, he held the offices of President of the Parent-Teachers Association, President of the Marlboro Area Arts Council, President of the Rotary Club of Bennettsville (where he was a Paul Harris Fellow), Chairman of the Marlboro Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the Marlboro County Library Board. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he was a Sunday School Teacher, Choir Member and member of the Board of Trustees. He became a charter administrator of Chesterfield-Marlboro Technical College (Northeastern Technical College) at Cheraw, S.C. where he served as Development Officer and Dean of Continuing Education from June of 1969 until June of 1982. In 1990, he and Mrs. Patton moved from Bennettsville to Rock Hill, S.C. where they resided at Westminster Towers. They became members of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church. There, he served on various committees, and was a Stephen Minister. He was also a member of the Senior Advisory Board of Piedmont Medical Center. His wife, Eleanor Breeden Patton, survives him as well as two daughters, Carol Patton Tift and Anne Patton Williams, one son, Charles Otis Patton, III, one daughter-in-law, Karen Helton Patton, two sons-in-law, Martin Marion Williams and Dr. Jerome Pound Tift, six grandson, on granddaughter, and 2 great-grandsons. Memorials may be sent to Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, 421 Oakland Avenue, Rock Hill, S.C. 29730-3529 or Westminster Towers Endowment Fund, 1330 India Hook Road, Rock Hill, S.C. 29732. Interment will be private.
