York - Mr. Charles Shirley, 61, of 6058 Swinging Tree Lane, died Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at his home.
Graveside services will be 3:00 p.m. Friday at Forest Hills Cemetery with the Rev. Chad Howard officiating.
Mr. Shirley was born January 12, 1949, and was a son of the late J.W. and Cleo Cooper Shirley. He was a Marine Veteran of the Vietnam War. He studied welding at Greenville Tech. College. He worked as a pipe welder for Daniel Construction, BE&K Bowater Project, Rock Hill Process Piping, Springs industries, Suitte Construction, Flour Daniel Celanese and Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Company. He was a welding instructor for York Tech. College. He retired from Continental Tire of Charlotte, NC and Winthrop University of Rock Hill. He also owned Shirley's Tile and Stone. Charles loved children, camping, fishing and gardening flowers and being with his family. He was a wonderful, loving son, father, and husband but above all he was a follower of Jesus Christ.
Mr. Shirley is survived by his wife, Joyce C. Shirley of the home; two sons, Benjamin Shirley and his wife Brittany of York and Seth Shirley of York; three daughters, Tiffani Howard of Middleburg, Penn., Traci Ward and Trina Shirley both of Greer, SC; one brother, Ronnie Shirley of Greenville, SC; five grandchildren, Stephen Howard, Tyler Howard, Caroline Ward, Jeremiah Ward and Savannah Shirley.
The family would like to give special thanks to Hospice and Community Care for the prayers and Support from so many people and special thanks to Mr. Harry Broadwell for visiting Charles in the hospital and home. The family would also like to thank Charles's Aunts, Maybell Pelfrey and Estell Okelly of Wahalla, SC and West Union, SC for continuous support and prayers. Special thanks to Mrs. L. Milem and Mrs. Burris of York Comprehensive High School and the staff of York Head Start for continuous love, support and prayers. Thanks to the VFW, American Legion and Catawba Coalition. Also special thanks go to Bobby Burns, Carol Burns, Andrea Burns, Marshall Burns, Mike Cook, Debbie Cook and Kathy Cook Krzemien.
