Clara Gilliam Phillips House CHARLOTTE - Clara Gilliam Phillips House died May 14, 2012 at Huntersville Oaks. She was born April 19, 1927 in Banner Elk, NC. She was a graduate of Cranberry High, Lees McRae College and Appalachian State Teachers College. She taught school at Beach Mt. Elementary in Avery County and after moving to Charlotte in 1957 she taught 3rd grade at Tuckaseegee Elementary and then at Lakeview Elementary where she retired. Clara decided she wasn't finished quite yet, so she substitute taught at Oakdale, Tuckaseegee and Westerly Hill schools. She taught in the after school program at Westerly Hills and Title 1 Reading. Clara taught for over 40 years and loved her chosen profession. Some of her favorite pastimes were shopping, especially at Wal-Mart, going out to eat and traveling to the beach. Clara was preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Sallie Gilliam, her first husband, Harry Phillips, brother Arlo Gilliam and her husband of 47 years, Ben House. She is survived by her daughters, LaMoine (Monie) Bean and husband, John Bean, Terri Seay and husband Kevin Seay; sisters, Lou Harkey (Pete) and Claudia Gilliam; grandson's Bryan Callahgan and Brandon Seay and her Grand dog Harley Ann Bean. Also, many nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life will be held 12:00 noon, Friday, May 18, 2012 at Mulberry Baptist Church, 6450 Tuckaseegee Rd., Charlotte, NC followed by the interment at Crown Memorial Park, 9620 Rodney St., Pineville, NC. Visitation will be held from 11:00 am until service time. Memorial donations may be made to Shriners Children Hospital, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607 or Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 1161 Hwy 194, Banner Elk, NC 28604. Palmetto Funeral Home has been in trusted.
