Clara Rawls Roddey

Clara Rawls Roddey, 83, formerly of 601 Country Club Drive, passed away Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at Westminster Health and Rehab. A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Roddey was born December 8, 1924 a daughter of the late Albert Love and Willie Dunlap Rawls. She was a retired executive secretary for M. Lowenstein and was a member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church for over 50 years where she was a member of the Julian Lake Sunday School Class, the Betty Rader Circle, was on the Flower Committee and the Archives Committee. Mrs. Roddey was a graduate of Rock Hill High School and Winthrop University. She was a member of the Tuesday Afternoon Book Club and Charter Member of the Pine Lakes Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her husband John Barron Roddey; a grandson Barron Callaghan Roddey; a brother Albert Dunlap "Dunny" Rawls and a sister Patsy Rawls Dowdle. Surviving are a daughter Leila Roddey Hicklin and her husband Dr. Harry E. Hicklin III of Rock Hill; a son William Joseph Roddey IV of Columbia; a brother Malcolm Wayne Rawls and wife Susan of Rock Hill; a sister-in-law Jerri Rawls of Rock Hill; three grandchildren Harry Eugene Hicklin IV, Leila Barron Hicklin and Charner Caroline Creecy. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00pm Thursday at the home of the daughter and son-in-law Dr. and Mrs. Harry E. Hicklin III at 606 Oakwood Lane in Rock Hill. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Roddey will be held Friday at 11:00am at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church with Reverend Jim Richardson and Reverend Laura Smith Conrad officiating. Interment will precede the memorial service at 10:30 at Laurelwood Cemetery. Memorials can be made to Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church 421 Oakland Avenue, Rock Hill, SC 29730.
