Daniel “Mose” Webster Spurlock, III, 76, died peacefully on September 14, 2024 in Fort Mill, South Carolina.
Dan was born on August 24, 1948 in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Dr. Daniel W Spurlock, Jr. and Mrs. Mary Caroline Postell Spurlock. After graduating from Seaman High School in Topeka, Kansas, he attended Louisiana Tech University where he received a BA in psychology and later received an MA in psychology at Northeastern Louisiana University.
Dan met his wife of 15 years, Kathy Morrow Spurlock, while attending Louisiana Tech. Dan and Kathy had one child, Anne, whom he loved deeply.
Dan resided in Baton Rouge and spent over twenty years employed with Ascension Parish Schools as a child psychologist. He was passionate about student success and loved working with students, teachers, and administrators.
Dan emanated unbridled joy, a larger than life personality, a pearl-clutching sense of humor, and unwavering stance on human rights and social justice. He enjoyed many acting roles in local theaters of Shreveport and Monroe. He talked fondly of his role in the 1964 movie, “The Shepherd of the Hills.” He was passionate about LSU football and basketball, and enjoyed attending or listening to the games with his brother, Postell, and dear friends. Dan could often be found near a chess board, a game he played with his father at every opportunity, and later his grandchildren.
Dan is preceded in death by his father, Dr. Daniel Webster Spurlock, Jr., his mother, Mrs. Mary Caroline Postell Spurlock, and his brother, C.E. Postell Spurlock. He is survived by his daughter, Anne Morrow Spurlock Perrone, her husband, Jeffrey Perrone, grandchildren Kaylin and Grant, his sisters and their spouses Mary Caroline and Barry Ancelet, Ann Logan and Tony Swearingen, and Frances and Steven Huggins.
Services will be held at a later date in Plaquemine, Louisiana. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Baton Rouge Food Bank, a nonprofit regularly supported by Daniel.
