David William Eggert

December 20, 1941 — December 11, 2024

Tega Cay, SC

David Eggert passed away peacefully at home on December 11, 2024 from natural causes.  He was born December 20, 1941 in Barberton Ohio.  His parents were William Eggert and Katherine (Cintavy) Eggert (deceased).  Funeral services will be held on December 14, 2024 at 2pm at Saint Philip Neri Catholic Church at 292 Munn Road, Fort Mill, SC.  A reception will follow the service.

David had the biggest heart of any person you ever met and truly cared about others.  He loved to be with family and friends.  His house was the official happy hour location and fish cleaning spot for the last drop fishing buddies.  He was the happiest helping or teaching people, especially about fishing and shooting clay targets.

David enjoyed fishing and shooting and spending time with his wife Joanne whom he had been married to for 45 years.  David won many contests shooting and loved to compete and have fun.  He was very active with Charolotte Rifle and Pistol for a many years and later transitioned to shooting sporting clays at Rocky Creek.

Fishing was a passion: walleyes on Lake Erie, crappies and bass in Lake Wylie, and salmon in Alaska.  Being on the water put an excitement and energy into David that he loved to share with others.

David was very proud of his 14 years serving with the Ohio National Guard as the 1st Sargeant107th Armored Cavalry, HQ squadron.  He had some active duty during his time serving.  He always thanked veterans for their service.  David met his wife, Joanne , in the military when she was assigned to his unit.  His first words were what in the heck is a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?

David retired from Continental Tire after 35 years service.  He managed the textile testing lab for years and moved to Purchasing and ISO Auditor with relocation in 1995 to Charlotte.  During his career, he received many accolades and awards.

David was a very active member of Saint Philip Neri Catholic Church in Fort Mill, SC.  David helped to start the church men’s club, the Knights of Columbus unit, the adult choir, the life teen choir, the blood bank, and pet partners.  He was a passionate reader of the Old Testament at Mass; his deep voice easy to understand.  David started Pet Partners after Father John Giuliani spoke about wanting to have comfort or emotional support dogs to visit the sick.  With the help of the Holy Spirit in a month’s time David had 12 parishioners with dogs trained to visit nursing homes, children homes, and hospice.  David loved his therapy dog Reba.  They were a good working team to bring joy and comfort to so many people.  Together they had over 800 visits to various locations.

When David retired at 54, he began volunteering at Pilgrims Inn picking up food and donated furniture and appliances, then delivering them to people in need.  He did it for many years and had  helpers from Saint Philip Neri along with his beloved dalmatian, Princess.  He said he was living the beatitudes, feeding the poor, clothing the cold, helping the homeless.

David was survived by his wife, Joanne Eggert; daughter Lorraine Schneider, son-in-law Doug and granddaughter, Julia; son Eric Eggert and spouse Amy Black; sisters Judy Grillo, Kathy Copeland, Maggie Pitsch and Jeanne Wagner.  David’s love was so strong that he had family members he adopted: Jeff Brown, dear friend and brother; Bridgette Schmidt beloved daughter of the heart and her son Bradley Meekins, honorary grandson.

David will live on in our hearts, memories and stories for many years to come.
