David Michael McGee, 69, of Fort Mill, SC, passed away on June 10, 2023, after a long illness, at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House in Rock Hill, SC.
David was born on December 8, 1953, to the late Mike and Jo (Rice) McGee, in Louisville, KY. He was a graduate of Mars Hill College, where he earned a BA in Psychology. He spent his career in Retail Management, overseeing several stores, including, but not limited to, Radio Shack, Square D, Color Tile, and Walmart.
David loved music and was an avid collector of record albums and music CD's. He enjoyed traveling, cruises, family gatherings and boiled peanuts.
David’s life was a miracle of sorts in that he had lived for the last 19 years on TPN (Total Peritoneal Nutrition), due to an illness that affected his digestive system. For the last few years he managed a home eBay/Amazon business selling medical ostomy supplies and advising people all over the country who were dealing with similar health conditions as his own. David was a long time member of the United Ostomy Organization and The Oley Foundation and attended many of their national conferences. His story was also included in a book by Brenda Elsaghers’ entitled “It's in the Bag and Under the Covers".
He was a member of Forest Hill Church in Fort Mill and had several good friends in his Life Group. He and Ceil have been long time volunteers at the Billy Graham Library.
He is survived by his wife, Cecilia Brown McGee; his three sisters: Cathy Schwartz (Jay) of Greenville, Sarah McGee Lenth (Dave) of Iowa, and Carol Blair (Steven) of Myrtle Beach; his Aunt and Uncle: ‘Mike’ and Michael Swaim of Greenville; nephews: Greg Schwartz (Chelsey) of Fletcher, NC, Jonas and Solas Lenth of West Union, IA; niece: Sally Mertens (David) of Fletcher and numerous great nieces and nephews; cousin: Corey Swaim (Jacqueline) of Simpsonville and many additional McGee and Pitchford cousins. Additionally, David is survived by 3 children of his 2 previous marriages: Jennifer Steinwand (Aerrick), Drew Colton and Allison Porter (Josh) and their families. He is also survived by Ceil's two children, his step children, Julie Kiker (Trey) and Jimmy Brown (Jenna) and four step grandchildren who called him 'Pops'.
David will be missed by his family and friends. We are happy that he is now at peace and no longer in pain. David is whole again and for that we rejoice!
Special thanks to the staff at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House, especially Alexia, who was with Ceil, Sarah and Carol on his last night and participated in singing him into glory.
Also, a special thanks to his many neighbors and friends who were faithful to look out for David when Ceil needed to be away caring for her Mother, in Michigan, who recently passed away in March of this year.
A Private Memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials in David’s memory may be made to any of the following organizations :
Billy Graham Library , 4330 Westmont Dr, Charlotte, NC 28217; United Ostomy Association of America , PO Box 525, Kennebunk, ME, 04043; The Oley Foundation , 99 Delaware Ave., Delmar, NY 12054.
May you find comfort, as David did, in his favorite verse: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths”. Proverbs 3: 5-6 NKJV
