Mr. David B. Oates of Old York Road, a lifelong resident of Tirzah, passed away Monday, November 21, 2016 at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Geneva McClannon Oates, his parents, Isaac L. Oates, Sr. and Margaret Caveny Oates; 3 brothers, I. Leroy Oates, Jr., Boyce L. Oates and John C. Oates; and 2 sisters, Dorothy Harper and Nancy Baker. He is survived by his 3 children; Brenda Sandifer (Frank) of York, Rev. J. Stephen Oates (Mary Ruth) of Rock Hill, and Sara Durso (Terry) of Fort Mill; 3 grandchildren, Geoffrey Durso of Columbus, Ohio, Will Sandifer of Hanover, Maryland, and Sara Sandifer Watts (Harley) of Charleston, SC, and 1 great grandchild, Capers Watts. He is also survived by a brother, Howard Oates of Belton, SC and a sister, Mary Agnes Channell of York, SC and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Oates was a veteran of WWII, serving in the US Army from 1943-1946 as an anti-aircraft gunner in the Pacific Theatre, and was retired from Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Company. Mr. Oates was an Elder Emeritus and lifetime member of Tirzah A.R.P. Church where he served in many capacities. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at 3:00 pm at Tirzah A.R.P Church with Rev. Andy Putnam and Rev. Garison Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the Family Life Center following interment. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Westminster Rehab and the doctors, nurses and staff at Piedmont Medical Center for their compassionate care during the last 4 weeks. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to the Tirzah A.R.P. Church or Tirzah A.R.P Cemetery Assn., 6161 Mt. Gallant Road, York, SC 29745.
