Dorothy Pauline Nies, 87, passed away Saturday, February 7, 2009 at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House. Pauline was born on May 2, 1921 in Cumberland, MD. In 1941, she married William H. "Bill" Nies, Sr., an employee of the Celanese Corporation in Cumberland. Bill accepted a transfer to the new Celanese plant in Rock Hill, SC and in 1949, Pauline, Bill and their three sons relocated to Rock Hill. The family joined St. Anne Catholic church where Pauline has remained a member for 60 years. She enrolled her children in the first classes at the start of St. Anne School. Pauline (Polly as her friends called her) was an active member of St. Marthas, a woman's group serving the communities needy, preparing cooked goods, knitting for bazaar's and other fund raisers. She also worked welcoming and helping Vietnam refugees acclimate to their new life in America. She also transported many of the parish's sick and needy to and from medical appointments. She went to work at the Celanese plant, after the arrival of her sixth and last child, and worked there for 20 years. She was a push over for any fund raiser's knock or phone call with a worthy cause and always found a way to donate a little something. She was our foundation, our shelter and the glue that held us together. Surely, The Father has prepared a wonderful place for her. Mrs. Nies leaves behind six children; William H. Nies and wife Vernice, Robert A Nies and wife Cheryle, James E. Nies and wife Sandra , Kenneth R.
