Dorothy Broome Faris Whiteside

Dorothy Broome Faris Whiteside of 301 Ole Simpson Place, Catawba, died January 28, 2016 at age 89. This funeral will be held on Sunday at 3pm at Neely's Creek ARP Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends from 2 till 3pm at the church. A native of Kershaw County, she was the daughter of Len Durant Broome and Homer Rebecca Secrest Broome. She was the widow of Oliver C. Faris, Sr. In 1993, she married John Baxter Whiteside. A graduate of Rock Hill High School in 1943, she attended Winthrop College studying Secretarial Science. She worked as a Secretary at Rock Hill Printing & Finishing for 9 years. In 1953 she was appointed Postmaster at Catawba and served more than 35 years. As a member on the National Association of Postmasters, she was a state and national officer when she was active and also as a retiree. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal employees. She was a member of the York County Planning Commission for eight years and during that time was asked to name most of the roads located in the eastern part of York County. She did not name the one named Dot Faris. She was a member of the York County Shrine Auxiliary having been the cofounder of that group. A member of Neely's Creek ARP Church where she joined at the age of 13. Surviving are her husband John, her two sons, Mike Faris and his wife Becky, Craig Secrest Faris and his wife Deena, both of Rock Hill. Grandchildren, Trent Faris (Jeanie), Kathryn Faris Loeper (Kevin) and Charles Faris. Granddaughter JoAnna died in 2004 at the age of 32. Step Grandchildren Rebecca Gentry (Mark) and Caroline Stubbs (Everett). Great grandchildren Oliva Faris, Riley and Reagan Faris. Stepchildren are Kristi Kincaid, Erica Sweeney, Jennifer Sweeney, Chad Goodman, Joseph Goodman, DJ Goodman and Tyler Whiteside of Charleston, SC. Five step great grandchildren Austin, Hailey and Katelyn Kincaid of Indian Land, Cathryn Gentry and Rett Stubbs. Memorials may be made to Neely's Creek ARP Church 974 Neelys Creek Rd, Rock Hill, SC 29730. Online condolences may be registered at www.basscares.com.
