Douglas W Stokes

Douglas W. Stokes, age 87, died January 22 in Greenville, SC. He was the son of Percy J. Stokes and Julia Weeks Stokes. He grew up in Newberry, SC, where he was an Eagle Scout, as were his son and grandson, and attended the world jamboree in France after the war in 1947. He graduated from Newberry High School in 1949 where he lettered in football and baseball. He graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in pharmacy in 1953, where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. After a short stint as a pharmacist in York, SC, he moved to Rock Hill, SC where he lived for most of the rest of his life. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Joan Boyd Stokes, in 1998. He was a beloved husband and father, and always an example to his family. After retiring in 1994, he enjoyed traveling, and visited all 50 states and 15 foreign countries. He was an avid golfer, and had 4 holes-in-one and shot his age many times. He was a life-long member of First A.R.P. Church in Rock Hill, SC. He is survived by sons, Dr. Douglas W. Stokes, Jr., (Mary) of Greenville, SC, and Dr. Mason B. Stokes of Saratoga Springs, NY, grandchildren Douglas Boyd Stokes and GraceAnne Cheney Stokes of Greenville, his brother, Dr. J.K. (Percy) Stokes of Greenwood, SC, his cousin, Mrs. Nancy Padgett of Bethesda, MD, and many nephews and nieces. A graveside service will be held at the Neely's Creek A.R.P. Church cemetery in Rock Hill, SC on Thursday, January 25, at 2p.m. The family will receive friends after the service in the church parlor. Memorials may be made to First A.R.P Church in Rock Hill, SC, or to the charity of one's choice.
