Dr. Jess Thomas Casey, 84, of 1690 North Waccamaw Drive in Murrells Inlet, SC passed away Saturday, October 2, 2010. A native of Jackson, TN, Dr. Casey was born on July 24, 1926 a son of the late Jess and Bertha Bandy Casey. He was the former Dean of the School of Music at Winthrop University, and a veteran of the Korean War, where he achieved the rank of Sergeant in the United States Army. He was also a member of The Episcopal Church of Our Savior in Rock Hill, SC as well as the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Surfside Beach, SC. In addition to his parents Dr. Casey was preceded in death by his wife Melle B. Casey and their son Jonathan Casey. Surviving are one daughter Claire Winebrenner and her husband Scott of Savannah, GA; two nieces Glory Needham Sharp and her husband Richard of Las Vegas, NV, Jane Needham Kaufman and her husband Fred of High Springs, FL; great-nephews John Sharp and his wife Allison of Nashville, TN, Bob Sharp and his wife Cindy of Honolulu, HI, Rick Sharp of Franklin, TN, Scott Sharp also of Franklin, TN, James Kaufman and Annette Busch of Needham, MA, Peter Kaufman and his wife Becky of Valencia, CA, Noah Kaufman and his wife Suzi of Gainesville, FL; great-nieces Rachel Kaufman of New York, NY, Esther Kaufman of Gainesville, FL; and a close friend Mr. Thomas Grafton of Murrells Inlet, SC. A service to celebrate the life of Dr. Casey will be held Friday, October 8, 2010 at 2:00pm at The Episcopal Church of Our Savior with Father Charles Foss officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in honor of Dr. Casey to the Winthrop University Music Department c/o 129 Conservatory of Music, Winthrop University, Rock Hill, SC 29733, as well as the American Cancer Society c/o 6000 Fairview Rd # 200, Charlotte, NC 28210-2255.
