Dr. Laurence Davis Frederick Jr. Chapel Hill, North Carolina; formerly from Rock Hill, South Carolina, died Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at Duke Medical Center. Born May 8, 1922, Omaha Nebraska and the son of the late Dr. Laurence Frederick Sr. and the late Lauretta Van Beek. He graduated from the University of Illinois Medical School, 1945, and interned at Illinois Research and Education Hospital in Chicago and served his residency at Veterans Administration Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina and Captain in the U.S. Army Corp. He was a member of the American Board of Surgery and entered private practice in 1952 at York General Hospital, Rock Hill, South Carolina. He served as President at South Carolina Surgical Society, York County Medical Society and Chief of Medical Staff there, he was also Regent for the international College of Surgeons and President of the South Carolina Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, International College of Surgeons, American College of Abdominal Surgery, South Carolina Industrial Committee of SCMA for surgery for twenty years, and Consultant for the Surgical staff at the Medical University of South Carolina. Larry was a member and past President of the Rock Hill Kiwanis Club, President of the Rock Hill Chapter of the American Red Cross, Rock Hill Chapter of American Cancer Society, and the past South Carolina Board of Directors of the Cancer Society and Chairman of the Rock Hill Board of Health. He is a member of First Baptist Church of Rock Hill, South Carolina and past Chairman of Deacons. He is survived by his wife, Billie Owens Frederick, three daughters: Debra Carey and husband Mike, Lauretta Sue O'Connor and husband Chris, Janet Owens Cisco and husband Jeff-one son, Laurence Davis Frederick III and wife Jerlene. Twelve grandchildren, Nick and Ben Carey; Ryan, Erin, Sean, and Kyle O'Connor; Michael, Brian, and Drew Cisco; Josh, Mallory, and Whitney Frederick. An informal graveside service to celebrate the life of Dr. Frederick will be held Sunday, December 27, 2009 at 2:30pm at Rock Hill Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Dr. Doug Martin officiating.
