Dr. Jerry Vawter, age 95, passed away Monday, November 14th at the Laurels Assisted Living in Pineville, NC. Born in Medford, Oregon, Jerry served as a Major in the Army during World War II as well as 20 years in the reserves. He received a law degree from the University of Oregon in 1950. Jerry worked for Allstate Insurance before becoming a business teacher in Ashland, Oregon. He was active in his community as a scout leader, Mason, Shriner, and Grand Patron for the State of Oregon Eastern Star. After moving to the East Coast, he was a beloved substitute teacher in Charlotte and Fort Mill for 22 years. He was Fort Mill's oldest substitute at 91.
Dr. Vawter was married 56 years to the late Bobbi Vawter. Survivors include sons Jeff Vawter of Missoula, MT; Dr. David Vawter and wife Gail Vawter of Fort Mill; two grandchildren Bethany Vawter Sweatt and husband Anthony Sweatt; Matthew Vawter and fiancee Audrey Parra all of Fort Mill.
A Celebration of LIfe Service will be held Saturday, November 19, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church Fort Mill with Rev. Shannon Ford and Rev. Brett Freemon officiating. The family will receive friends after the celebration.
Memorials may be sent to the Foundation for Fort Mill Schools (foundationforfortmillschools.org) or the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
