Edith Wiley Bailey peacefully entered heaven on Monday, June 20, 2016 at Carolina Gardens. Most of the time Edith wouldn't tell her age saying her mother always used to say, "A woman that will tell her age will tell every thing she knows." Other times she would laugh and say that she had fibbed about her age so much she couldn't remember the correct one. She always wanted to live to be 100 and only missed that target by a few years. Edith was born in Princeton, West Virginia to William Henderson Wiley and Mamie Wall Wiley. She married Edgar J. Bailey and in time they moved to Rock Hill, S. C. Edith was employed by Smith Drugstore downtown selling cosmetics, helping to deliver prescriptions and handing out candy out the back door to children who weren't allowed in the store. She then worked at J. C. Penney for many years, where she said she often helped men find just the right gift for their wives. Edith and Ed were charter members of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and they both worked tirelessly wherever and whenever they were needed. She was the church's first pianist and in recent years brought much joy to the residents and staff of Carolina Gardens with her "never had a lesson" amazing talent. While Edith never gave birth to children, she mothered countless young people for decades as a Sunday School teacher and youth leader. Every Sunday would find her nodding her head and tapping her toe in the alto section of the Chanel Choir. She was active in WSCS|UMW and held several offices there and on church committees. She spent great deal of time on the visitation team and coordinating meals for the hospitalization or death of church members. She loved working at the Dorothy Day soup kitchen where one would have thought she knew each and every person there. She was a member of the Friendship Bible Sunday School class, the Young at Hearts and the Quilter's group. Edith will always be remembered for her quick laughter, her love of teasing and being teased and her musical talent. Most of all, she was always there to help someone in need in any way she could. She nurtured her family members and her nieces and nephews, and then did the same with her church family and her family at Carolina Gardens. Edith was predeceased by her parents, her six sisters and one brother,. She is survived by six nieces and four nephews and her very dear and loyal friend, Sherilyn Brewer, who she considered her own. She never failed to express her appreciation and God's blessing for anything done for her. The family is grateful for the care from the staff and residents at Carolina Gardens and from Hospice & Palliative Care Palmetto Region. Serivces will be held at 1pm on Thursday, July 7th at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with visitation beginning one hour before the service. Reverend A. Mickey Fisher will officiate the service. Graveside services will be held on Friday, July 8, 2016 at Roselawn Cemetary in Princeton, West Virginia. Memorials may be made to the Choir Fund or the Mike Culp Cancer Fund at Aldersgate United Methodist Church or to Hospice and Palliative Care Palmetto Region.
