On the evening of Dec. 3, 2015, Edward Columbus Tipton went home to be with his Lord while being served in the home of his daughter by the staff of the Spartanburg Regional Hospice. Ed was (91) years old. He was born September 2, 1924, in Greenwood, SC, where he grew up on the Greenwood Mill Village. Ed was predeceased by his loving wife of more than seventy years, Mattie Lou Marett Tipton, his parents Levi Webster Tipton and Wessie Allen Tipton, and all 3 of his siblings, Ruby Tipton Bannister, Fred Tipton, and Annie Ruth Tipton Peyton Thomas. Ed graduated from Greenwood High School and served in WWII in the 515th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He completed 39 combat jumps in France and Germany. Ed is listed in the Airborne & Special Operations Museum Roll Call http://www.asomf.org/rollcall/search/details.php?Entrant_ID=2364 He loved baseball, played on a textile league in Greenwood, coached little league over the years, and volunteered with American Legion ball in Rock Hill, SC. Ed worked until he was 85 years old and his motto was, "keep on keeping on". He was an active member at Rock Hill First Baptist Church until recent years. Prior church memberships included Harris Baptist Church, Greenwood, SC, until 1959 when he moved to Anderson, SC where he was a member of Orrville Baptist Church. Ed relocated to Rock Hill in 1962. Ed is survived by 3 children, Sybil Diane Tipton Smith (Mrs. Michael), John Edward Tipton (Jeanette), and Margaret Ann Tipton Mazura (Mrs. Tom), 3 grandchildren Deveron Shane Smith, Charles Edward Tipton, and Kimberly Tipton Apel and 4 great-grandchildren. The Celebration of Life Service will be conducted by Rev. Jamie Burdette at 11:00 am, Tuesday, December 8, 2015, at the Bass-Cauthen Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow.
