Elizabeth Louise Dunlap Patrick

Elizabeth Louise Dunlap Patrick, 78, died at Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House on August 1, 2014. She was the daughter of the late Inez Collins Dunlap and Marion Crawford Dunlap, Jr. Lib was born on Feb 24, 1936 in Rock Hill. She graduated from Rock Hill High School in 1954 and from Winthrop College in 1958. Lib worked her way through college by caning chairs, a skill learned from her father, a furniture maker. While working at the lunch counter at McCrorey's in downtown Rock Hill, she met Wayne Patrick, her life-long love. They were married on September 3, 1958, and together Lib and Wayne helped change Rock Hill, both in small and large ways. Although they traveled the world, they always returned home and gave much of their time and resources to their community. As generous champions of community events and organizations, they imparted this legacy to their daughters. Lib's engaging wit, keen mind, and easy charm endeared her, but it was her philanthropy and her family that defined her. Lib's compassion is marked by her volunteerism and her support of people in need. As a life-long volunteer for the York County Chapter of the American Red Cross, she taught hundreds of people CPR and First Aid, and she trained instructors. She worked bloodmobiles, local disasters, and served as a board member. In 1980, she was awarded the Clara Barton Volunteer Award for meritorious volunteer leadership. Her kindness extended to Hospice & Community Care and the family's endowment of the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House. Lib was an avid supporter of the arts. She gave freely of her time and patronage to the Arts Council; she served on the Gallery Committee and underwrote the awards for the annual Juried Competition for nearly ten years. Lib was a generous and ardent participant at the annual art auctions for many years, and she collected pottery from North and South Carolina potters whose work she championed. An accomplished gardener, Lib provided support for Glencairn Garden and the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens. She also sponsored activities and events for the Yorkville Artist Guild. Lib was a champion of education. She supported her alma mater, Winthrop University, serving on alumni boards and reunion committees. Because of her generous support of the arts at Winthrop, the Elizabeth Dunlap Patrick Gallery was named in her honor in 1999. Also, Lib was among the first group of honorees for the Medal of Honor for the Arts in 2001. Her support for education includes her zeal for basketball. Whether the Duke Blue Devils, the Winthrop Eagles, or the original Charlotte Hornets, she attended countless home games for her teams and monitored televised games, often pacing back and forth and yelling encouragement to her players. She and Wayne attended dozens of Final Four tournaments, including the back-to-back championships (1991, 1992) of Duke University. Other groups benefited from Patrick support as well, including WFAE, Good Folks of York County, Folkmoot USA, and the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour. Through the Patrick Management Company, Lib also supported the Come-See-Me Festival and the recent Rock Hill School District's iRock drive to purchase iPads for student use. Lib was an avid reader and was currently enjoying her third Kindle. She was a member of the Perihelion Club and the Lake Club Book Club. She enjoyed bridge, and was a member of two bridge clubs. Her greatest love was her family. Lib was a devoted wife, caring sister, and loving mom; her family was her joy. Surviving her are daughters, Trish McGuinn (Dennis) of Charleston, SC, and Kathy Wilson (Larry) of Rock Hill; her grandchildren, Michael McGuinn of Savannah, GA, Laura McGuinn and Daniel McGuinn, both of Charleston, SC, Jason Wilson (Erin) of Greenville, SC, and Melissa Dunkerley (Mike) of Summerville, SC; four great-grandchildren, Landon, Zachary, Eli and Carson; and her two brothers, Dr. John Collins Dunlap (Nancy Page) and Dr. Marion Crawford Dunlap, III (Nancy Cassity), both of Columbia, SC. The family would like to express their gratitude and deep appreciation for the staff of Hospice & Community Care and Home Bridge Community Services for their wonderful and loving care of Lib. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Sunday, August 3, 2014 at Bass-Cauthen Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held 11am Monday, August 4, 2014 at The Episcopal Church of our Saviour with burial immediately following at Laurelwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice & Community Care, PO Box 993, Rock Hill, SC 29731.
