Evelyn Brown Oates

December 7, 1919 — January 22, 2015

Mrs. Evelyn Brown Oates, age 95, passed away peacefully at Park Pointe Village on January 22, 2015. She was born in Rock Hill, SC to the late Roy Grady Brown and Mae Sherrill Brown. A 1938 graduate of Rock Hill High School, she was a beautician, homemaker and long-time employee of Belk Department Stores, where she was in charge of the housewares department. She married the late I.L. "Ike" Oates, Jr. and had one son, Larry. Evelyn was a faithful and active member of Tirzah ARP Church, especially involved in Women's Ministries and the Tirzahites group. She and her husband enjoyed travelling, trips to the beach and camping with their Airstream trailer. She dearly loved her family and cherished her visits with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. "Miss Evelyn" will be deeply missed by her son Larry and wife Mallory, of Winston-Salem, NC, grandchildren Stephanie Oates Troop (Josh) of Weaverville, NC, William Grant Oates (Julie) of Winston-Salem, NC . Great Grandchildren Elloree Claire Troop, Charles Isaac Troop, Lila McIntire Oates, William Grant Oates, Jr. , nieces Ann Jacobs ( Gene) of Longs, SC, Mary Jo Dickert of Rock Hill, SC and Mary Brown. Nephews Dan Sherrill (Louise) of Columbia, SC, Russell Brown and Charles Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Isaac Leroy Oates, Jr. , her parents, RG and Mae Brown, and brothers Grady Brown, Albert Sherrill and Joe B. Sherrill. The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 2:00 pm on Monday, January 26 at Tirzah ARP Church. A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 pm following the visitation at the church. Burial will follow at Tirzah Cemetery. The family would like to say a very special thanks to all the staff at Park Pointe Village and Willowbrook Court for the exceptional care they gave Miss Evelyn for many years and to Hospice and Community Care for their kind and loving support during her final months.
