Floyd Eward "Sugar Red" Smith, Sr., formerly of Brooklyn, New York, was born on August 14, 1943 in Augusta, Georgia to the late Walter Smith, Sr. and the late Martha West. He peacefully went to be with his Lord and Saviour on September 21, 2022 surrounded by his loving family.
In 1961, at the age of 18, Floyd traveled alone to New York City from his hometown (where he was raised with his deceased siblings-- Walter Smith, Jr., Thelma Cogole, Marion Smith, John L. Smith, Curtis Smith, Maxine Rowland, and Juanita Riley). Not long after his arrival, he met the love of his life, Dorothy Mae Smith, whom he remined loving and loyal to until God brought him home. Their 57-year union gave birth to their four children: Floyd "Poochie" Smith, Jr., Krane Smith, Tisha Smith, and Devon "Dino" Smith (who preceded him in death). Floyd Smith lived a great and adventurous life as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend-- he always had a story to tell.
He never failed to make others laugh (even in his final moments). A true jack of all trades, Floyd worked as a butcher and lead manager at Feldman Lumber for 18 years. Later in life, Floyd and Dorothy moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he resided until his passing. In his free time, he enjoyed being superman for family and friends. Floyd Smith will always be remembered for his stunning work ethic, readiness to lend a helping hand, vivid storytelling, his kind-hearted nature towards his loved ones, and his strong personality. He opened his home to anyone who needed a place to stay. To be absent in the flesh is to be present with the Lord. Floyd entered the golden gates in divine peace, forever with us, watching over us and protecting us.
He leaves a lasting legacy to be cherished by his survivors-- his love, Dorothy Mae Smith; endeared children-- Floyd Smith, Jr., Krane Smith, and Tisha Smith; sisters-- Doris Ivey and Betty Dickerson; grandchildren, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
