Rock Hill, S.C. - Frank William Saxon, 62, beloved husband, father, grandfather and proud Vietnam Veteran, passed away peacefully at home, Thursday, July 7, 2011, his loving wife by his side to the end.
Frank proudly served in the U.S. Army, 1st Infantry Division, 16th Battalion, Recon 1 (THE BIG RED ONE). His military honors include the Vietnam Service medal, Combat Infantry badge, Army Commendation medal, National Defense Service Medal, 2OS Bars, Vietnam Cam Medal, Marksman-14 SS, Bronzer Star medal and the Purple Heart.
Frank worked in the logging industry before returning to college in 1988. He earned his B.A. degree at Mansfield University in 1992 and graduated with high honors and a teaching degree in history. He was also an active member of the Mansfield University Anthropology Club and participated in many archeology digs throughout his college career.
Frank was an avid military historian and a Civil War re-enactor in his spare time. He was chosen to be a re-enactor in Ted Turner's TNT movie "Gettysburg."
Frank is survived by his wife, Diane Saxon, their two daughters, Frannie Saxon Gage of Rock Hill, SC and Tai Marie Saxon of Austin TX; his step daughter, Connie Ann Burt of Troy, PA and his two grandchildren, Elijah Barnhardt and Rebecca McMullen.
Frank was a lifetime member of the VFW and in the past served on the Honor Guard. He will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery among his fellow Vietnam brothers.
There will be a family and friends gathering to honor Frank on Saturday, August 6, 2011, from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. at their home: 5056 Greenmeadow Drive, Rock Hill, SC 29730.
Graveside services with full Military Honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 11, 2011, at Arlington National Cemetery.
