Frederik Northrop Smith

Frederik Northrop Smith, 80, passed away at Wellmore Of Tega Cay on Thursday, March 19.
Born in Baltimore, MD, Fred was the son of the late Henry Smith and Louise Rose Smith. He is survived by his wife, Jane B. Smith; his two daughters and their spouses, Kirsten Elizabeth Smith and Kris Russell, Marion Brune Paterson and Guy Paterson; three grandchildren, Greyson Frederik Russell and Idabelle and Emma Paterson; his brother and sister-in-law, Peter and Fumiyo Smith; and his brother's three children and their families.
Fred earned his PhD in 18th Century British Literature at the University of Virginia and taught in the English Departments of Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio; the University of Akron,Ohio; and at UNC-Charlotte.
Known as a literary scholar who published three books and numerous articles, Fred also found time to draw - particularly cartoons - and fish at Topsail Island with friends.
Memorial donations can be made in his name to Wellmore of Tega Cay with "Staff Appreciation" written in the memo line. Their address is Wellmore of Tega Cay, 111 Wellmore Drive, Tega Cay, SC 29708. Because of the Coronavirus, a memorial service will be held at a later date. Information will be posted on the Palmetto Funeral Home's website.
