George Cherry

George Cherry, 76, of Rock Hill, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2020 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 14, 1943 in Catawba, SC, son of the late Joe A. Cherry, Sr. and Willie Mae Stinson Cherry.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Cherry and brothers, Willie M. Cherry, Joe A. Cherry, Jr., Emmanuel L. Cherry and Arthur J. Cherry.
George was a member and Elder of Faith Christian Ministries in Rock Hill and adored his church family. He retired from Georgia Pacific after 30 years of dedicated service. He enjoyed cooking, especially on the grill and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. In his earlier years, he enjoyed playing softball. Most important to him was his family and he relished his role as a grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Eliza Cherry; daughter, Wanda Cherry Sturdivant (Gerard) of Rock Hill; son, George Melton Cherry of Rock Hill; grandchildren, Tivia Williams (Sharod), Larquis Cherry, Trey Cherry, Ty Cherry, Sulaiman Sturdivant, Elisha Sturdivant and Chenelle Brown; 11 great grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; sisters, Janice R. Jones (Willie), Gurdine Mackey, Barbara Kennedy (Sandy) and Zelda Brown, all of Rock Hill; brothers, Frankie L. Cherry of Charlotte and Melvin B. Cherry of Rock Hill; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 PM, Thursday, February 6, 2020 at Bass-Cauthen Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, February 7, 2020 at Agape The Well Church, 135 S. Oakland Avenue, Rock Hill, SC 29730. Burial will follow at Rock Hill Memorial Gardens.
