George William Gately, Sr., 101, of Fort Mill, SC and formerly of Monticello, IN, passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at the Blake of Baxter Village surrounded by his family. He was born March 1, 1918 in Bethlehem, PA, son of the late Alexander Patrick and Barbara Frances (nee Pfannenschmit) Gately.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Gately, granddaughter, Anne Marie Gately and brother, Al Gately.
George proudly served his country in the United States Army in the 147th Infantry during World War II. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars, an American Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Ribbon. For 37 consecutive months, he was in the Pacific without leave as a combat infantryman, rifle sharpshooter and radioman at Guadalcanal, Bismarck Archipelago and Iwa Jima.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church and owned and operated Gately's Outdoor Advertising in Monticello, IN. A loving husband and father and a wonderful grandfather, he was looked up to and respected and will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Mary Ann (nee Montgomery) Gately; sons, George Gately, Jr. and wife, Janice of Koutz, IN and Charles Gately and wife, Dora of Venice, FL; daughters, Roseann Tanaka and husband, Roy of Coto de Caza, CA, Jane Reeser and husband, Richard of Phoenix, AZ, Nancy Ulery and husband, David of Logansport, IN, Florrie Manuel and husband, Steve of Lancaster, SC, Fran Misch and husband, William of Lafayette, IN, and Barbara Marcinko and husband, Steve of Tega Cay, SC; 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and sister, Florence Bailey of Cincinnati, OH.
A Graveside Service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA with military honors at a later date.
