Mr. George E. Laney, Jr., 89, of Fort Mill, (SC) passed away June 21st after a brief illness. George was born on August 22, 1923 in Alton, (NH) and graduated from Alton, (NH) High School, in 1941. As a youngster, he worked with his father splitting and cutting firewood for hotels in the Alton Bay and Lake Winnipesaukee area. Growing up on the Merrymeeting River he enjoyed fishing, swimming and ice skating which he was expert at. He had a passion for motor vehicles, becoming a master mechanic. He built "mud buggies" with his brothers, racing his "flying frog" at Trotting Park in Farmington, (NH). After High School, George joined the US Marine Corps with his best friend, Georgie Wentworth, and served in the Pacific in WWII. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal in 1946. He resumed life in New Hampshire and married the love of his life, Geraldine, whom he met at dances in New Durham before the war. They put their best foot forward in the baby boom effort and raised six children, Daniel, George F., Dave, Susan, Mark and Becky. A great provider for the family working 50-hour weeks, he managed to make time for memorable summer vacations. He worked 30 years at United Tanners in Dover, NH, color matching and finishing leather, and at Thompson Center Arms in Rochester, NH for 14 years in the etching room, etching the famous "Puma" logo on the side of the Contender pistol/rifle. George and Geraldine moved after 28 years in Lee, (NH) to Fort Mill, (SC) in 1984 where they were welcomed as active members in the church. They enjoyed traveling and semi-retirement. He worked at the Fort Mill Food Lion, and became known for his friendly smile and outgoing personality. He fully retired finally in 2011 after 26 years. George had a passion for his Pastor's and church family at Agape and was there from the beginning days of the Ministry. He was predeceased by his wife Geraldine, and is survived by a sister, Pauline Cathcart, of Lee, NH; his six children, Daniel of Missoula, MT, George F. of Madbury, NH, Dave of Stratford, NH, Susan Montana of Dover, NH, Mark of Lee, NH and Becky Laney of Fort Mill, SC; 14 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. There will be a church service on June 30th at 2:00 p.m. at Agape International Ministries "The Well" 135 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC. 29730. A graveside service will be held on July 3, 2013 at the South Side Cemetery, Rt. 156, Nottingham, NH. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Mission at Agape International Ministries.
