Gerald Dexter Ghent

July 26, 1924 — October 15, 2009

Mr. Gerald D. Ghent Sr., 85, passed away Thursday, October 15, 2009 at Wayne T. Patrick Hospice in Rock Hill. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 17, 2009, at Grandview Memorial Park on Cherry Road with Reverend Jim Moss officiating. Born on July 26, 1924 in Fort Collins, Colorado, to John and Jane Ghent, Gerald served in World War II, and was a Chief Petty Officer in the Naval Reserves. A member of the Ebenezer Group, he also owned and operated several barber shops including The Chairman and the U R Next barber shops in Rock Hill. He lived at Park Pointe Village in Rock Hill, and attended Tirzah Presbyterian Church. Gerald enjoyed many summers on Lake Wylie fishing, swimming, and boating with his children and grandchildren. He was quick to hit the road in search of adventure, and loved a good joke. Gerald was also working on the great American novel about a preacher and a bootlegger who build a town together. Mr. Ghent is survived by three sons, Larry (Martha) of York, Bruce (Debbie) of Rock Hill, and Gerald Jr. (Brenda) of Rock Hill, and a daughter, Susan Oliver (Rolla) of Greer; eight grandchildren (Bryan, Emily, Elizabeth, Jeremy, Derek, George, Breanna, and Quincy); and three great grandchildren. In his final days he was surrounded by friends and family, and recollected his love for his two departed wives, Mary Jo Wallace Ghent and Ruth Faulkenberry Ghent, and his life as a Christian. The family will receive friends after the service at Park Pointe Village in Rock Hill, SC. In lieu in flowers, memorials can be made to Hospice and Community Care P.O. Box 993, Rock Hill, SC 29731, or Tirzah Presbyterian Church, 180 Tirzah Road, York, SC 29745. A special thanks to the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice staff for the care given to Mr. Ghent.
