Mr. Gordon "Gordy" Oakley, Jr., age 57, passed away Saturday, May 5, 2018, at home surrounded by his wife, Tammy J. Oakley and her family, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born September 28, 1960 in Oneida, New York to the late Gordon Oakley and Barbara K. Cassell, Gordon is survived by his wife, and his siblings William Oakley, Mary Reidy, Richard MacNeilly, and Joyce Moss. He was preceded in death by his brother Robert MacNeilly.
Mr. Oakley has worked the past 14 years for The Building Center, Inc. and was presently the Lumber Operations Manager of the Pineville, NC location. He truly loved his job and all of his co-workers.
When not working, his passion was Hydroplane racing. Gordy was touched by the racing bug at age 5 when his father took him to his first race. From that point on, that's all he ever wanted to do. He bought his first boat at age 23, and has been racing ever since, winning multiple races and championships, to include Florida Inboard Racing Club 1983 Rookie of the Year. His last race was this past March at the Orange Cup Regatta, Lakeland, Florida.
As a dear friend posted after Gordon's passing, "in his honor, may we never forget to do that thing which lights up our life, that makes us smile from the inside out and truly fulfills all that God has placed inside us to do during this beautiful thing called life."
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Community Care, 2275 India Hook Road, Rock Hill, SC or charity of one's choice.
A celebration of Gordy's life will be held on Saturday, May 12th from 4pm to 7pm, at his home.
