Mr. Gregory Richard Zakrzewski, 86, of Fort Mill, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2012. Born in New York City, Greg was the fourth of four children born to Grace and Peter Zakrzewski. New York City saw Greg's growing up, schooling and marriage. After a stint in the Army, Greg went on to obtain a degree in Chemical Engineering from New York University. Greg married Helen Nikolow 'Nicky' in 1949. Greg lived and worked in New York City, Bahrain, a tiny kingdom in the Persian Gulf, Ardsley, NY, Saudi Arabia and eventually Tega Cay and Fort Mill, SC. Greg and Nicky had four daughters: Joan Fesko, Stephanie Smith, Anne Rockwell, and Tania Payne. Greg retired at 59 to chase golf balls, dabble in the financial world, and volunteer for 15 rewarding years at the Museum of York County. After 46 years of marriage, Nicky died of cancer and in 1997, Greg married Helen Bardsley, a neighbor, fellow church and Vintage Club member. Helen had four children, and with Greg's four there is a goodly number of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren between them. After 28 years of retirement, Greg recognized that life comes with its ups and downs. So in his words, he just says "So Long". A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, February 25th, 2012 at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Fort Mill, SC with a visitation following the service. Father John Giuliani, C.O. is officiating. The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Building Fund, St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, 292 Munn Road, Fort Mill, SC 29715.
