Herbert (Herb) Meitzler Reid, Sr. passed away on April 19, 2024, at the age of ninety-one. He was born in Elmira, NY, on April 12, 1933, to Maybelle Gertrude Gaumer Meitzler and William Henry Pitcher Reid, who preceded him in death.
Herb graduated from The University of Maryland with an electrical engineering degree. As a young man, he served in the US Army as a radar sergeant in Alaska. Later, he excelled in a career with NavAir (Patuxent River, MD), where he worked proudly for 42 years before retiring in 1999. At NavAir, he began the Internet Security Program for the Navy and traveled the world. A key responsibility he often reflected on with joy was being a program manager for the U.S. presidential helicopter.
In retirement, Herb enjoyed hunting, crabbing off his dock in MD, gardening, and building oak furniture for himself, family, and friends. He had been a member and sponsor for Ducks Unlimited, a performing member of The Carolina Copy Cats, a construction volunteer on a mission trip with Providence Presbytery in Guatemala, and a leader of his neighborhood Homeowners Association in Rock Hill, SC. He moved to Rock Hill following his marriage in 2006 and at the time of his death, was a resident of Harbor Chase in Rock Hill.
Herb is survived by his wife, Joan Taylor Reid; a sister, Nancy Reid Watts of Leonardtown, MD; four children: Deborah Oldewurtel (Dave) of West Virginia, Herbert M. Reid, Jr. (Annie) of Florida, Jeffrey Reid of Maryland, and Shannon Morgan (Chris) of Maryland; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A son, Brian Reid, preceded Herb in death.
Herb was the stepfather of Angela Sheets, Carolyn Sutter, and Robert Sutter and had four step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.
Family and friends will honor Herb lovingly with a memorial service in the Historic Sanctuary at Unity Presbyterian Church in Fort Mill, SC, on Monday, April 29 at 2pm. An interment ceremony will follow at Solomons United Methodist Cemetery in Maryland, where Herb will be laid to rest beside his son.
The family thanks the management and staff of Harbor Chase Rock Hill and Providence Care Hospice for their loving and concerned care for Herb.
