Rock Hill, SC- Hildred Izaline Bostic Wallace went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at White Oak Maner in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
Memorial service will be 1:00 pm Friday, March 25, 2022, at The Church of Our Savior, 144 Caldwell Street, Rock Hill, SC 29730. Burial will follow at Grandview Memorial Park, Cherry Road.
Mrs. Wallace was born July 3, 1930, to Ilma Joseph and Theodore Bostic on the US Virgin Island of Croix.
She was raised in Watergut and lived with her mother and three of her siblings. As the only girl in the household, she was charged with cooking and cleaning and taking care of her younger siblings while her mother worked.
As a teenager, she left the island with her mother and two younger siblings and began her journey living in New York. She graduated from Wadley High School in Manhattan, New York and attended Harlem Hospital’s nursing program. She was a member of St. Andrews church in Manhattan, New York, where she sang in the choir and married her husband.
On October 10, 1959, she married John Wallace. A few years after that, she bore her first daughter and after that ordeal vowed to never go through that again. However, four and a half years later, after much coxing from her husband for a boy, she birthed her second daughter.
She worked as a dental assistant and later worked as a school aide at P.S. 42, in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York until her retirement in 1990.
In 1994, she and John moved to Rock Hill, South Carolina, where they both joined The Church of Our Savior Episcopal Church where she served on the first Wednesday committee and was a member of the Alter Guild. She volunteered at York Place and became a mentor for troubled children and also became part of the Bible Study Fellowship, where she developed a strong yearning to learn more about the Bible and her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
She was the youngest girl of eight siblings, Olric Carrington (deceased), Claire Marshall, Helen Sterling (deceased), Raymond James, Stephen Bostic (deceased), Raphael Bostic (deceased), Ira King and Titus Lenhardt.
She loved entertaining her family and friends, dancing, music and singing. She was well known for her cooking and famous for her baking, pie, cookies, fudge, tart, and making ice cream. Everyone loved when she would bake and give them away as gifts and at home we would get highly upset if we missed getting the last piece.
She was affectionately known as Ma, Mom, Mommy, G, Geta, Jugalita, Hoogin, Hilda, Hildabran, Hildy, Hilly, Hildreth, Mr. Quallace, Chica, Daydo, Baba, and Sis by those who knew and loved her.
Mrs. Wallace is survived by her husband, John Wallace, Jr.; two daughters, Lydia and Lisa Wallace; four grandchildren, Pacquita Humphreys, Shayla Humphreys, Symone Taylor (Eric) and Joshua Wallace-Whiting; three great-grandchildren, Alona Taylor, Elijah Taylor, and Essiah Taylor; four siblings, Claire Marshall, Raymond James, Ira King and Titus Lenhardt, a sister-in-law, Geneva Wallace; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Whitesell Funeral Home is serving the family.
