Howard James Smith

Howard James Smith, 76, of Indian Land, SC entered the Kingdom Triumphant on October 9, 2021.  He was the son of the late Howard Jacob Smith and Naomi Elizabeth Smith, both of Lancaster County, PA.  He was born June 24, 1945  in Ephrata, PA.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Major Robert D. Mumma, a career Air Force officer and by a granddaughter, Savannah.  He is survived by his wife, Patricia J. Smith of Indian Land, SC; a sister, Maryann Leckron of New Windsor, MD; four sons (Gene, Phil, Jason, and Ben); two daughters (Deanna and Melissa) from a previous marriage to Carol Smith; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two nieces and two nephews, and two great-nieces and two great-nephews.

Mr. Smith was a graduate of Milton Hershey School in Hershey, PA and Juniata College in Huntington, PA where he received a BS in Elementary Education.  His Masters in Education was achieved at Towson University in MD.

After teaching for 39 years at Dublin Elementary School in Harford County, MD, he retired and enjoyed country living with gardening, landscaping, hunting, fishing, camping, reading and traveling on tours and cruises.

A lifelong lover of music, he was an active singer in church choirs, choral societies, barbershop choruses and quartets.  He was a soloist for many weddings and other special occasions.  Recently, he sang with the Faith Presbyterian Church choir.

There will be no services at this time.  Memorial contributions in Howard’s name may be made if so desired to:
