Isla Jean Custer

Isla Jean Custer, age 82, passed away on July 15, 2022 at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House in Rock Hill, SC following a stroke. She was the oldest daughter of Max and Hazel Barber. Her parents preceded her in death, as did her younger sister, Barbara Ann (Bobbie). She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Bill Custer, and her two children from her first marriage to Bill Atwell, Jr, Amy Atwell Woods and Billy Atwell, III.

She was a graduate of Beaver High School in Bluefield, WV. She trained as an X-ray Tech at Bluefield Hospital. She received additional training, becoming one of the first Registered Radiation Therapists in West Virginia. She eventually became the Chief Radiation Therapy Technologist at West Virginia University Medical Center.

In 1984 Isla Jean moved to Rhode Island to accept a Staff Technologist position at Rhode Island Hospital. In 1986 she joined Radiation Oncology Associates, where she worked until her retirement in 2002.

Other than singing in various community and church choirs, her greatest love was spending time with her grandchildren, Ross and Nathan Woods and Chloe Atwell. In 2018, she and Bill moved to Tega Cay, SC to be closer to family.

Isla Jean was friends with many from Rhode Island, West Virginia and Tega Cay. Her death came too quickly for all of us and we will miss her terribly.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Wayne T.
