Janet Elaine Keene

Janet Elaine Keene died on Sunday, August 7, 2016, at Levine Dickson Hospice House - Southminster in Charlotte, NC after a five year battle with cancer. Jan was 68 years old. Jan was born to Paul F. Gatens and Kathleen Gatens in Charleston, WV in 1947.

She is survived by her spouse of 48 years, Larry W. Keene, Indian Land, SC. Also surviving is their son Jason W. Keene, his wife Gina and three grandchildren; Blake 16, Morgan 12, and Mia age 9 of Murfreesboro, TN. Jan is survived by two brothers; Dr. Paul Gatens Jr and his wife Cindy and Dr. Timothy Gatens and his wife Mary. Jan has two nephews; Brendan Gatens and his wife Sophie, of London, England, and Brett Gatens and his wife Mary and son Teddy, of Carmel, IN.

Jan retired from The Center of Outpatient Medicine in 2009 where she worked as a Registered Nurse in Bloomington, IL for over 20 years before retiring to South Carolina. Jan stayed in contact with the wonderful people she worked with at TCOM.

Her hobbies, before her sickness, were golf, sewing, painting, embroidery, cooking and her three wonderful grandkids.

Jan attended Missouri State College in Springfield, MO before graduating with an associate nursing degree from Central Methodist College in Fayette, Missouri.

Jan loved all her many friends from Sun City Carolina Lakes, Indian Land, SC that made her last years on earth so worthwhile, taking her to chemo, radiation, and infusion treatments.

A memorial mass will be held, Saturday, August 13, 2016, at 11 AM, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, in Lancaster, SC the family will receive friends following the service.

Jan has requested that rather than flowers donations be made to: Hospice & Palliative Care: Palmetto Region 1057 Red Ventures Drive, Fort Mill, SC 29707; Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster. They supplied loving care and compassion during Jan's darkest days. Special thanks to RN Jennifer Davis and Dr. Robert Smith of Hospice.
