John Martin Boatwright, Jr., 87, went to be with the Lord on Friday, August 17, 2018, at CMC Pineville.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 25, 2018, at 11:00 at Palmetto Funeral Home in Fort Mill, SC.
John was born in Birmingham, AL, on July 29, 1931, to John Boatwright and Sue Adams Boatwright. When John was a teenager, his family moved to Montgomery, AL, where he finished high school, and set a track record at his high school. He became an Eagle Scout during this time as well. John then attended Auburn University, and graduated with a civil engineering degree. He served two years with the Air Force in the Korean War, and continued to work with undergraduates yearly at the Air Force Academy in Colorado. He was a home builder in Montgomery for 20+ years, and then in 1974 he turned to commercial building and moved the family up to Tega Cay, SC. He worked as an estimator for several large firms during his career in Charlotte, NC, such as J.A. Jones Construction Co., McDevitt & Street Company, F.N. Thompson and Turner Construction Company. He traveled and lived around the world while employed by these companies.
John was an avid sports lover, especially college football, and he officiated many high school football and basketball games for 25+ years. He obtained his pilot's license and owned a few airplanes throughout his life. He built and flew model airplanes for years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, John Ryan McFarland. Surviving are his three daughters, Terilynn Storey (Matt) of Indian Land, SC, Tracey McFarland (Randy) of York, SC, and Christy Capps (Mark) of Chester, SC; one son, John Martin Boatwright, III, of Fort Mill, SC, and a sister, SuAnne Reed of Dallas, TX. He was also dearly loved by five grandchildren and three great-grandsons.
