John Alden Cook, 76 of Rock Hill, SC passed away peacefully at his home Wednesday morning, September 9, surrounded by his family. Born on September 1, 1939 in Canandaigua, NY, John was raised in the village of Orleans with his 6 brothers and 2 sisters. He was a happy and energetic young boy who spent many days playing with his neighborhood friends in the woods behind his parents' home. John was a competitive athlete. He excelled in football and track at Clifton Springs High School (class of 1957) and played league softball well into his forties. He attended the University of Buffalo until he went into the US Army in 1960. While in the Army, John was stationed at Dugway Proving Grounds in Utah attached to the Signal Meteorological Corps. He met his wife of 53 years in Salt Lake City. John and Miriam settled in Seneca Castle, NY after his service ended and had four children. John worked for Xerox as a Computer Programmer Analyst. They relocated to Rock Hill, SC in 1978 where John worked at M. Lowenstein Corp., JP Stevens, and Milliken. After retiring, he worked nine years at Lowe's Home Improvement store. John is preceded in death by his father, Stanleigh G. Cook; his mother, Adelaide Benson Cook; brothers Stanleigh Gene Cook and Edward Alan Cook; daughter, Andrea Lee Cook Marko; and granddaughter, Michelle Nicole Eddington. He is survived by his brothers Burr (Vivian) of Syracuse, NY, David (Carolyn) of Buffalo, NY, Jim Cook of Clifton Springs, NY, Gary (Kathy) of Palmyra, NY; his sisters Margaret Cook of Newark, NY and Mary Ann (Robert) Marshall of East Lansing, MI; his wife, Miriam C. Cook, sons John L. and Gregory (Kathy) Cook; his daughter, Jodi (James) Geater all of Rock Hill, SC. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2015 at 2pm in the Chapel at Bass Cauthen Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to Providence Care Hospice, 1736 Old York Road, York, SC 29745.
