John Dean Dellinger, “John D,” 89, of Rock Hill, SC peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 23, 2025. John was born on September 20, 1935, in Kings Mountain, NC to the late James Oliver Dellinger and Emma Irene Porter Dellinger.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Linda Ellen Sellars Dellinger; son, David Burns Dellinger; brothers Earl Emmanuel Dellinger, James Hunter Dellinger, Paul Eugene Dellinger, and Herbert Boyce “Red” Dellinger; sister, Emma Corrine McDowell; and grandsons, John David Dellinger and William Jarrett Dellinger.
John devoted his life to his country and community, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War and later supporting veterans through his work with American Legion Post #34 in Rock Hill, advocating for their needs and ensuring their voices were heard. John held various positions at his home post, including the Post 34 Commander for 1990-1991, 1991-1992, 1994, 1995, and 1996 and ultimately the SC State Commander for 2 consecutive terms from 2006-2007 and 2007-2008. These roles were deeply meaningful to John, giving him the chance to make a lasting impact on veterans’ lives.
John was also known by many because of his work with the Ford Motor Company for over 40 years, namely as the Parts Department Manager. There was hardly a part number he did not have memorized.
John is survived by his son, John C. Dellinger (Lynda Reid); Daughter, Lori Whisonant (Jeff); Brother, David Dellinger (Linda); Sisters, Myra Little (Linwood) and Darlene Bigger (George); Grandchildren, Erica Ballard (Nick), Amber Thrower, Bethany Dellinger, John Dellinger (Rachel), and Megan Whisonant (Will); Great Grandchildren Ava, Brynn Arbor, Kam, Parks, Kyleigh, Bentley, Max, Mia, Serenity, Harleigh, Zoe, Atlee, and Zach; Cousin, Jewel Conard; and finally Tebow – his most loved, well-fed, and super spoiled canine companion.
A heartfelt thank you to the Veterans Administration, Home Instead, and Providence Hospice for their dedication and unwavering support for John D. and our family. A very special thank you to Lynda Reid—your boundless love, care, and support have been an extraordinary blessing to us all.
