John Rockwell Fitzgerald, 82, most recently of the Laurels Retirement Community, passed away on Sunday, March 30th in Pineville NC. Born on June 15th, 1931 in Salamanca NY, he was the son of the late Raymond and Mary Fitzgerald, also of Salamanca NY. He graduated from Salamanca High School in 1949 and received a degree in Economics from Villanova University in 1953. John was an officer in the United States Army, serving from 1953 until 1962. After resigning his commission, John worked in a variety of rolls in the travel and tourism industry. Upon his retirement he took up residence at the Paddock Apartments, Fort Mill and was an active participant in the parish of St. Philip Neri. John is survived by a sister, Marjorie McKenzie, of Winchester VA; a son John Fitzgerald and wife Mary of Fort Mill SC and a daughter Connie Whitcomb and husband Larry, of Great Valley NY. John enjoyed the blessings of five grandchildren: Christopher Whitcomb of Buffalo NY, Meghan Emborsky and husband Rudin of Coudersport PA, Miranda Fitzgerald of Fort Mill SC, Meggan Morrison and husband George of Allentown PA and Morgan DuBose and husband Cam of Hartsville SC. His life was also filled with the joy of six great grandchildren: Lauren Emborsky of Coudersport PA, Logan and Gavin Marsolick of Allentown PA, and Shane, Mason and Blake Gainey of Hartsville SC. A memorial service, officiated by Father John Giuliani C.O., will be held at St. Philip Neri on Saturday, April 19th at 10:30 AM. The family will receive guests before the service beginning at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to either of the following: St. Philip Neri Building Fund, 292 Munn Road, Fort Mill SC 29708 or The Friends of the Oratory, 434 Charlotte Avenue, Rock Hill SC 29730.
