John Patrick ("Jack") Monahan, 68, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 15, 2015. Jack was loved by many. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Pam, his children Megan (Stephen) Cairns, John (Allie) Monahan, Brian (Angie) Monahan and Colette (Eric) Anahory. He was a beloved PopPop to Thomas, Emily, Caroline, Jack, Sean, Will, Peter, James and Teddy. He is also survived by his brother Dan Monahan and sisters Kathleen Carney and Noreen Monahan. He was born on January 8, 1947 in Rahway, New Jersey as the son of Irish immigrants, Patrick and Nora Monahan. After receiving a degree from Seton Hall University and earning his commission, he served admirably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War in 1969 and 1970. For his actions while assigned as a platoon leader in the 5/7th Cavalry, Jack was awarded a Silver Star, a Bronze Star with Valor, multiple Purple Hearts in addition to other awards and commendations. Upon leaving active duty Jack was active in multiple VFW Posts, including the founding of Indian Land VFW Post 12136. In recent years, Jack became very involved with the First Cavalry Association "Garry Owen" and reunited with many old friends. He was honored to present a Memorial Day wreath at the Wall in Washington, DC. In his professional life Jack had a very successful career in the insurance industry. He earned several professional designations of which he was proud of to include CIC, CPCU, CLU, CHFC, and CPIA . After 30 years, he retired from the Allstate Insurance Company in 2001. Jack remained active within the industry through his teaching and speaking engagements. Throughout his life, Jack was a devout and active member of the Catholic Church. His commitment to his faith led him to lead multiple capital campaigns to build and expand the parishes to which he belonged, most recently at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Lancaster, SC. Most of all Jack loved the best things life offers ... family, friends, laughter and faith. He will be dearly missed. A viewing will be held from 4PM to 8PM, Monday, January 19, 2015 at Palmetto Funeral Home in Fort Mill, SC. A Mass of Christian Burial officiated by Father John Giuliani, will be held at 2PM on Tuesday January 20, 2015 at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, 292 Munn Rd. E., Fort Mill, SC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jack's honor to Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church Building Fund, 7031 Waxhaw Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720.
