Mr. Joseph Jackson Mercer Jr, 89, died Sunday, March 16, 2014 at Westminster Health and Rehab facility in Rock Hill, SC. The memorial is scheduled to be held at the Palmetto Funeral home in Fort Mill, SC this Saturday, March 29th at 4:00pm, assistant Pastor Debbie Dykes from Fort Mill Church of God will conduct the service. Born in Round Oak, GA., Mr. Mercer was the son of the late Joseph J. Mercer, Sr and Dorothy O'Kelly. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II where he received honorary medals such as the American Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. After his service in the military he received a law degree from George Washington University where he met his wife Edith M. Mercer who worked in the Canadian Embassy also in Washington, DC. He and his wife relocated to Oak Ridge, TN where he took on a position with the Department of Energy as a contract lawyer, where he worked for thirty years. He was an active member of The United Church Chapel on the Hill where volunteered as a Sunday school teacher. He enjoyed listening to classic and country music, traveling with his wife Edith and doing crossword puzzles. Joseph is preceded in death by his wife, Edith M. Mercer, to whom he was married to for sixty-two years along with his daughter Julia M. Ward from Knoxville, TN. Surviving are his children, Joseph J. Mercer III who resides in Fort Mill, SC with his wife Patti and their four children, and daughter Janet Catherine Mercer who currently resides in Knoxville, TN. His grandchildren include Melinda Dawson, James Ward, Jake Mercer, Alaina Gilewicz, Mallory Mercer and Mitchell Mercer. His great grand children include Jacob Dawson from Nashville, TN.
