Joseph Barnes O'Donnell

Joseph Barnes O'Donnell (JB), born on August 10, 1947, in Granville, New York, passed away peacefully at the Palmetto Patriots Home in Gaffney, South Carolina, on September 14, 2024, at 7:10 pm at the age of 77. After high school, JB proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1971. While stationed in California, he married Donna Lynn Hartstein on December 19, 1970. Together, they raised five children and created a life filled with love and devotion.

After his military service, JB pursued a degree in accounting from Siena College and worked in various fields, including grocery management and social services, particularly in the Child Protection Unit. JB was also deeply involved in veteran affairs, serving as Commander of the American Legion for seven years, Commander of the VFW for one year, and Washington County American Legion Commander for one year.

JB was known not only for his dedication to his family and community but also for his fantastic sense of humor. He was a notorious jokester, always quick with a quip or a playful prank, bringing smiles and laughter to everyone around him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Donna Lynn O'Donnell, of Fort Mill, SC, and his children: David O'Donnell and his wife, Jennifer O'Donnell, of Lincolnton, NC; their children, Matthew and Dylan. Lisa O'Donnell Schueren of Fort Mill, SC; her daughter, Abigail Schueren. Pamela O'Donnell of Greensboro, NC. Tammy O'Donnell of Greenwich, CT. Thomas O'Donnell of Granville, NY.

JB is also survived by many beloved extended family members and friends. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings.

A celebration of JB's life will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2024, at the chapel at Palmetto Patriots Home at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Alzheimer’s research in his honor. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Palmetto Patriots Home for their compassionate care.
