Joseph Steve Zsiga, "Joe" On the evening of February 19, 2015, Joe passed away at the Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, SC, after a brief illness. He was 90 years old. Joe was born in Cleveland, Ohio on March 27, 1924, to Nicholas and Margareth Zsiga. In 1941, at the age of 17, Joe volunteered to serve in World War II, and served on the Merchant Marine Ship Alcibiades. He later served in the Navy during the Korean War as a Gunners Mate on the USS Missouri. On October 6, 1951, Joe married Bernadine Reese from Rocky River, Ohio. They were married 44 years, until Bernadine's death in 1995. Joe and Bernadine made their home in Stratford, CT, where Joe worked as a design engineer for Avco Lycoming, Pratt and Whitney, and Homelite. Joe and Bernadine raised four children. In 1974 the family moved to Rock Hill, SC, when Homelite relocated. Joe retired in 1989. Joe enjoyed family camping trips, square dancing, model trains, woodworking, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a faithful member of St. Anne's Catholic Church and the Tuesday Night Rosary Group. He was a tireless volunteer for the Boy Scouts, Habitat for Humanity, the Railroad Club, the Charlotte Trolley Restoration Museum, and many service organizations including the Order of the Moose, American Legion, VFW, and Elks' Club. He was for fifty years a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, was one of the first members of the K of C Oratory Council in Rock Hill, and was voted "South Carolina Knight of the Year." Joe was preceded in death by his wife Bernadine, his brothers Frank and Carl Zsiga, and his sister-in-law Theresa Zsiga. He is survived by his brother John Zsiga of North Royalton, Ohio, by his children Ann Marie Cordner of Rock Hill, Michael and Jean Zsiga of Tulsa, OK, Steve and Mary Zsiga of Beacon Falls, CT, and Jim and Lisa Zsiga of Shady Side, MD, and by 14 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday February 23 at Bass-Cauthin Funeral Home, 700 Heckle Blvd., Rock Hill. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday February 24 at St. Anne's Catholic Church, 1694 Bird St., Rock Hill, followed by interment at Grandview Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oratory Council Knights of Columbus. The family would like to thank all the wonderful caring folks at Pruitt Health (UniHealth) in Rock Hill, Father Paul and the members of St. Anne's Catholic Church, Joe's brothers in the Knights of Columbus, and all those who touched Joe's life.
